Everything you need to know about wedding invitations. Part 2 – Choosing the Right Invitation

When it comes to choosing an invitation for your upcoming wedding, we admit, the task can sometimes be a little bit daunting! After all your wedding invitation will likely be the very thing that sets the mood and the theme for the rest of your wedding so of course you want it to be just perfect. But starting the process can be, for some, just as stressful as picking out your perfect dress! And that’s why we are here to help.

There are many things you need to take into consideration when you start shopping for your wedding invitations such as:

  • your budget
  • do-it-yourself v.s. ordering from a website or a catalogue
  • time-frame (do you need them quicker than the average couple?)
  • theme/colour (do you have a colour you are trying to stick to, or a particular theme for the day?)
  • pocket/no pocket
  • raised ink/no raised ink
  • fun and funky or classic and elegant
  • eco-friendly (plantable, recyclable etc)
  • will you need an RSVP card or are your guests RSVPing online or via email/telephone (do you have a wedding website or do you need one?)
  • will your guests need accommodation information and/or directions

And this is just the basics. It’s no wonder that couples come in feeling overwhelmed!

So we have decided to come up with this helpful checklist to try and make things a little less stressful and overwhelming for everyone.

First, if you can, start looking for wedding invitation ideas approximately 12 months before your wedding this will help get your creative juices flowing and give you an idea of what you want before crunch time comes. (This is especially helpful when it comes to figuring out how you want to word your invitations.)

Second, remember that each invitation company has a different turnaround time for printing invitations so make sure you ask how long the turnaround time is. This will help you know when you need to order.

Third, you should be ordering your invitations approximately 6-7 months prior to your wedding day. This should give most companies time to print your invitations, and deliver them to you with enough time for you to properly assemble them, address them, and put them in the mail.

Fourth, typically invitations go in the mail 6-8 weeks BEFORE the RSVP date. Be sure to keep in mind that the further the invitation has to travel (i.e. out of province or country) the sooner it needs to go in the mail and likely the sooner you may need to be ordering your invitations! If in doubt check with your local post office about mailing times and postage costs for your invitations.


To ensure that your wedding invitations are sent out to your guests on time be sure to order your invitations with plenty of time to spare!
